Our Homies

This is ¡DUENDE! We are trying to get shit done.

michellejigga:

In August 2011, I co-founded a grassroots community arts organization, ¡DUENDE! Long Beach. Since then, we have done nothing but HUSTLE HUSTLE HUSTLE to build a strong youth empowerment movement in Long Beach, CA, through the arts. In only eight months, we have been incredibly effective. We have…

ZzzZzzine….

We like to hibernate for unannounced random spurts of time. It’s kind of our thing. But we’ve also been involved in other life-consuming things like:

1. Slowly dying inside growing at grad school: We’ll soon be masters of po’etry. And by po’, we mean poor.

2. Hustlin’ for ¡DUENDE! Long Beach: A grassroots community arts organization empowering youth through writing and performance. Help us get a Long Beach City Youth Slam Poetry Team to BNV!

3. Educating: We teach Spoken Word Poetry at a high school. Yes, this is a real class, and that fact is beyond rad.

4. Obsessing over the fact that At the Drive-In has reunited. Indefinite hiatus.

Through all this, there’s been an itchin’ in our bones to put out another issue of ¡VAYA! We’ve made some golden connections with talented artists over the past several months, and KNOW that the next compilation will just be spewing awesomeness all over this hemisphere. We are now accepting submissions for #5!!! Deadline is Wednesday, February 29th! Check the “How to Submit" page for more info.

So in case you’ve forgotten about us, here’s a little reminder! Our first issue to sell out of its 100 copies, and thus digitized, #2 Dear Summer, featuring Twin Suns (who are now doing even more AMAZING things since we interviewed them in May 2010).

ALSO - We’ll be sharing a table with some awesome peeps over at LA Zine Fest 2012 - Sunday, February 19th. Come drop by!

Good morning!

<3 ¡V!

¡VAYA! @ LA ZINE FEST TOMORROW!!!

Also - We’ll be rep’n ¡DUENDE! Long Beach and slanging copies of “This is Our Youth / This is For Our Youth” - an anthology featuring poems from local youth and adult poets on the theme of growing up.

I’ve made the decision to archive outofprint issues online. At first, I was very stubborn about digitizing something that prances around under the slogan “handmade print.” I felt that it would “compromise the integrity” of ¡VAYA!’s uniqueness. But this zine operates under the philosophy that creativity belongs to everyone, not just a few. ¡V! is not the greatest shit out there, but its contributors’ works are pretty damn gnarly and I don’t want their talent to go unrecognized. So here’s the first issue to sell out of its 100 copies, #2: Dear Summer featuring Twin Suns. It’s been outofprint since March, but there are three copies still left at {open} books in Long Beach.

Remaining issues:

#1: A Love Letter from ¡VAYA! featuring The Bohunks 25/100 remain

#3: People are Places. Places are People. featuring Electric Current Eccentric Khaos 15/100 remain

#4: Tu Eres un Arbol featuring an interview with Mary Lou Lemoine 92/100 remain

If you’d like to pick up any of these issues, contact me at vayazine@yahoo.com and we’ll set something up. The Etsy store is coming soon and we’re gonna be throwing a contest where you’ll have a chance at winning some awesome handcrafted goods!

Love,

¡V!

OOOH SHIT, GUESS WHAT? #4!!! Super limited amount of copies available tonight! You like that sneak-attack, huh? More to be printed later. This is obviously not a picture of the zine, but my camera is holding its pictures captive.
Obtain a copy same way as always: willing to deliver to San Gabriel, Long Beach, and East L.A. areas, and mail to any out-of-staters. Let me know if you would like a copy! vayazine@yahoo.com
Things coming in the near future:
1. Etsy store 2. Digitized version of outofprint issues. 3. Book publishing!
Hiatus officially over. Glad to be back.

This was filmed back in May during the making of Issue #2, and Twin Suns has since become our best friend. They are an amazing band and an inspiring group of human beings. Support them in any way you can by streaming/purchasing/downloading/sharing their music on Bandcamp, “like”ing them on Facebook, or attending any one of their upcoming shows on their working class version of a Fall/Winter tour. ♥ ¡V!

Holy Moly! Look at this amazing video that Jose of Dulce de Leche filmed of the November 21st ¡V!DA! event we had at the Airliner. It was such a huge success, and we’d like to thank all the artists, bands, and event-goers who made it all possible.

We’re so excited for the next one on December 19th which is going to be in celebration of both my and Kris of Dead Air Productions’ birthdays. This is also a very special night because it is the one year anniversary of ¡VAYA! Zine! To commemorate such a miraculous event, we will be re-releasing the out-of-print issue #1 featuring The Bohunks. You’ll also get an opportunity to check out all of our past music features and artists, as well as check out #4’s upcoming ones.

We’ll be posting up the flyer as soon as the artists are finalized!

Thanks so much to everyone for the continued love and support. Where would we be without such amazing friends?

Love,

¡VAYA!

Czech it out! We’re video-featured on friendlyventure.com.

Thank you so much Carlos for the interview, conversation, argument, and overall good times. Looking forward to more days when we can call the cops on cholo kids beating the ish out of each other with skateboards in the park.

(P.S. Don’t forget that the Dead Air / ¡VAYA! art/music/vendor show is NEXT WEEK! Sunday November 21st)

FOR MAE RAMIREZ, DEVELOPING THE HANDCRAFTED VAYA ZINE IS BEST DESCRIBED BY HER AS “NOT JOURNALISM, BUT PRODUCING A MIXTAPE WITH POETRY, ART, AND WORDS.” RAMIREZ SEEKED THE RE-EMERGENCE OF YOUTHFUL CULTURE WHICH STOOD STRONG DURING THE EARLY TO MID-2000s IN MONTEBELLO.

Guess who got hired as art director of a one-Sunday-a-month residency at the Airliner? This woman right here! So what does this mean? The ¡Vaya! philosophy that everyone is an artist and needs a forum to share her/his work is manifesting into a monthly opportunity to celebrate the infinite imagination of our community. In addition to art, there will be music, DIY vendors, and in the near feature, spoken word. Let’s do this! Touch, learn, and breathe real art. RSVP on the ¡Vaya! Facebook page: facebook.com/vayazine
PLEASE NOTE THE DATE HAS BEEN CHANGED TO SUNDAY NOVEMBER 21ST!

So pumped to get these wonderful goodies and zines ready for Artcade (see events page), I’m losing blood over it! New to the ¡V! eco-friendly goodies line: Record Journals. WOOOO! See you OCTOBER 9TH!

In June, we had the awesome opportunity of being a last-minute vendor at this awesome night of music/art invasion called “Artcade” in Montebello. We got wine tipsy, ate some bomb vegan tacos, danced to some funky beats, had ludicrous conversations with strangers, and made those strangers our new friends - all within the presence of some mind-staggering art. On October 9th, Artcade pt. 2 will be back and so will we! Here are some reasons why you should go:
+ The third edition of ¡Vaya! will be released and ready for adoption! (asking for $ donation…)+ #3’s music feature, E.C.E.K will be tearing shit up.+ Our wonderfully handmade, eco-friendly goodies will be for sale: = pocket-sized journals made from scrap paper and old textbooks = upcycled shirt tote bags = upcycled decorative record bowls (7” and 12”) = reclaimed wood art = and moooooooreee…+ Vegan-friendly food vendors.+ Support your local artists and musicians.+ Booze for all you alcoholics.+ At 3 dollars before 11pm, it’s about 10 dollars cheaper than a movie ticket.
Hope to see you all there (click image for better detail!), and don’t forget to send your submissions for #3 by the deadline, TUESDAY SEPTEMBER 21st.
